How to Order a Commission

Send me a photo that truly captures the essence of your subject, and we’ll chat about the details from there. Once we’ve discussed everything, I’ll provide a quote and get started when I have an available spot. I ask for a 50% non-refundable booking fee to reserve your place.

During busier times, there may be a bit of a waitlist, but don’t worry—if you reach out to me via contact form, I’ll be sure to reach out as soon as my schedule opens up.

Taking a Great Reference Photo

A great reference photo captures the details, textures, and colors that bring artwork to life. Whether it’s a person, pet, or landscape, these tips will help you create a clear, high-quality photo that makes for an inspiring piece.

    • Encourage natural lighting from a window or outdoors to prevent harsh shadows and preserve details.

    • Avoid flash to keep colors true and prevent flattening.

    • Take the photo from a short distance without zooming the camera in (otherwise we lose important details and image becomes pixelated).

    • Use a high-resolution setting on the camera to capture the small details.

    • Capturing different perspectives is essential to highlight texture, depth, and dimension. By photographing the subject from multiple angles, you create a more dynamic reference that brings out subtle details, helping the final artwork feel more lifelike and three-dimensional.

    • Avoid overly complex backgrounds to keep focus on the subject.

    • High contrast between subject and background can help define edges and add clarity to the image.

Testimonials

  • "I can’t even put into words how incredible Barb’s work is. When she handed me the portrait of Goose, I was completely speechless. She captured Goose’s essence so perfectly—it’s like she brought her to life on the page. Every detail, from the sparkle in her eyes to the softness of her fur, is absolutely stunning. This was actually the second commission I’ve hired Barb for, and she has exceeded my expectations both times. Her work is so much more than art; it’s a memory I’ll treasure forever. Thank you, Barb, for your amazing talent and for giving me something so special!

  • "Barb’s talent is absolutely unmatched. When I saw the portrait she created of Flower, I was blown away. She didn’t just capture the likeness—she captured the spirit and personality, right down to the tiniest details, like the shimmer in their eyes and the intricate patterns on the bandana. It feels like I can reach out and touch Flower every time I look at it. This piece is so full of life, and I’ll treasure it forever. Thank you, Barb, for your incredible artistry!"

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes, I ship anywhere within the US!

  • Once you order your commission, I will reach out within 72 business hours. We will work together to define the size, pose, and background, and determine the timeline and a 50% non-refundable booking fee will be due to reserve your spot. Once the drawing has started, no changes to composition will be permitted. When your artwork is completed, the final image will be shared electronically and the remaining 50% balance + shipping costs will be due. After the balance is paid, your artwork will be prepared securely and shipped to you with care instructions.

  • I highly recommend framing your drawing with a reputable framer who uses UV protective or Museum glass (both UV and non glare). It is mounted on a matte and a backboard has been provided. These are both acid free materials. If you choose to change the color of your matte, please feel free to do so, just make sure the materials are acid free. Carefully remove the artist tape and have your framer remount it on your new matte. The drawing has a piece of glassine paper on the front to protect and prevent any color rubbing off. The color can be erased or smudged, so handle with care until you get it framed.
